Is it possible, using the existing Wikipedia API's to get a list of articles around a Geo-location? Sort of like how Google maps does it?
I would like to say that I am "here" and find out what is around me on Wikipedia.
I can see on articles like this you can see the "Coordinates" on the right hand side, so I would like to do a query on these coordinates...
any thoughts?
The Wikimedia API lets you build apps and scripts that access content from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
In the desktop view of Wikipedia, in the default skin and most others, the left-hand panel has a "Wikidata item" link, under " tools ". Copy the URL of that link, paste it into a text editor, and read (or copy) the ID from it.
Add to article To add 57°18′22″N 4°27′32″W to the top of an article, use {{Coord}}, thus: {{Coord|57|18|22|N|4|27|32|W|display=title}} These coordinates are in degrees, minutes, and seconds of arc.
The Geolocation API returns a location and accuracy radius based on information about cell towers and WiFi nodes that the mobile client can detect. This document describes the protocol used to send this data to the server and to return a response to the client. Communication is done over HTTPS using POST.
UPDATED ANSWER:
Wikilocation has been retired and now there is an OFFICIAL WIKIPEDIA API
? action=query & list=geosearch & gsradius=<radius-in-meters> & gscoord=<lat>|<lon>
