I have this weird situation on my Mac running OSX Lion where the ~ (tilda) does not go to my user directory. Instead when I type "cd ˜", I get:
-bash: cd: ˜: No such file or directory
Any advice on how to fix this?
Hit the "option" key, and — while holding the key down — hit the "n" key as well. This will bring up a flashing cursor and a tilde with a blank space beneath it. The option key (located between the "control" and "command" keys) is used to create many accented letters.
Toggle between open windows of the same app Mac: cmd + ~ (tilde) Alternate between open windows of a single application. For example, if you have three different keynote files open.
On a Windows PC: Enable Num Lock, press and hold Alt, then type the character's specific number code (see below). iOS or Android device: Press and hold the A, N, or O key on the virtual keyboard, then select the tilde option.
Locating the Tilde Key To get the tilde character you will need to hold down the Shift key. On Macs, the key with the tilde is called the ` key. On British computer keyboards you may find the tilde key to the middle right of the keyboard, near the @ sign key.
After changing the keyboard (System Preferences>Keyboard>Input Sources) from 'US International - PC' to 'U.S.', I was able to verify tilde sign (~) works as expected from Terminal.
It looks like in some of the macbook, the keyboard is set to 'US International - PC' instead of 'U.S.'
