Is there a way to force-show the tab bar in Notepad++ when in notepad-mode? That is, when I have the asNotepad.xml file in the Notepad++ executable directory?

Go to Settings > Preferences... > General and under the Document List Panel heading, select the Show checkbox. A vertical list of all open tabs opens on the left.
Opening a new Tab in Notepad++ using Keyboard Shortcut ⚡️ You can also press Alt + F to expand File Menu and then either press enter (as the New tab is the first option that will be highlighted by default) or press the N button.
Like full-screen mode, Post-It mode has the ⊞ in the upper right of the window for leaving this mode, or you can use the shortcut (the default shortcut is F12 ) or exit Notepad++ and restart.
The latest version of Notepad++ (v6.5) allows you to select whether to hide the tab bars. It's under Settings > Preference > General > Tab Bar

What you should NOT do is hide the tab bar, and remove the asNotepad.xml file. If you do these things you will NEVER have the tab bar.
What you should do instead is setup the appropriate file associations in the Preferences so that notepad++ will simply be the default application for those file extensions.
