Why do I need a Markdown with a front edit editor like WMD? What does the markdown do to the content that’s sent from the WMD editor?
How does Markdown store the content in the backend? Is it the same way like *bold* or in some other format? Why can’t I just do an html encode?

Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML)“. Markdown helps anyone write and create web pages, with no knowledge of HTML.
Markdown is easier to write than HTML, and it's easier for most humans to read Markdown source than HTML source. However, HTML is more expressive (particularly regarding semantic tagging) and can achieve some specific effects that might be difficult or impossible in Markdown.
Why is Markdown better for writers than Word? Markdown's main advantage over WYSIWYG editors is that you don't have to move your mouse all over the screen to select various formatting options. When you write in an app such as Word, there are a plethora of options in the various toolbars along the top of the screen.
