The "Tool Options" and the "Toolbox" used to be in the same window, but it somehow broke apart. Can somebody give some hints as how to bring them together as one again?
In multi-window mode, the Toolbox is a utility window and not a dock. In single-window mode, it belongs to the single window. Use Windows → Dockable Dialogs to view a list of dockable dialogs. Select a dockable dialog from the list to view the dialog.
To select tools for doing something, go to the "Tools" menu, and select any tool you want. To put the tool on the panel go to "Edit > Preferences > Toolbox". But it can only be edited in a linear way, that is, while sorting it in the "options" there's no way to see where tools will finally appear on the grid.
I'm using GIMP 2.8.1. I hope this will work for you:
Open the "Windows" menu and select "Single-Window Mode".
Simple ;)
In the detached window (Tool Options), the name of the view (Paintbrush) is a grab-bar.
Put your cursor over the grab-bar, click and drag it to the dock area in the main window in order to reattach it to the main window.
