I tried the following settings, but all it did was make things progressively worse.

I don't understand the default value of spelling_selector, but maybe that's the key?

To enable spell-check: click F6 or go to View->'Spell Check'. When spell-check is enabled, it displays red squiggles below the misspelled words. By right click on misspelled word you can correct the misspellings.
Here's how. Select the text where you'd like to disable spell check or press Ctrl+A to select the entire document. On the Review tab, click Editor, and then click Set Proofing Language. In the Language box, click Don't check spelling or grammar, and then click OK.
Here's how. Click File > Options > Proofing, clear the Check spelling as you type box, and click OK. To turn spell check back on, repeat the process and select the Check spelling as you type box.
To open the Spelling preferences, choose “Edit” in the toolbar menu on top of the screen . Then choose “Preferences”. Select “Spelling” on the left . Disable the “Check Spelling While Typing” by unchecking the box (so that the tick has disappeared), then click on OK.
Press F6 to toggle Spell Check
You can also find it under View > Spell Check
