First React Native App: Task :app:processDebugMainManifest FAILED

Problem

I have followed the instructions as specified in https://reactnative.dev/docs/environment-setup, except for choclatey as I already have node etc. But I cannot build my app to reach the output RN boilerplate on the emulator(Step 2: in docs) following npx react-native run-android. I have searched for many many hours for a fix but I am not getting anywhere and it's becoming very frustrating. Below I have attached relevant outputs.

What worked for me on JDK 17, and should for JDK 16 too:

Append the following line to the ./android/gradle.properties file in your project:

org.gradle.jvmargs=--add-opens java.base/java.io=ALL-UNNAMED

You may need to stop existing Gradle instances if some are already running, the easiest way would be to restart your OS.

That's it!

I haven't encountered any other issues using JDK 17 with React Native so far

I think You have updated Java to version 16. Please, downgrade Java to version <= 15. This helped me with this error.

Had the same issue today on Mac, as already mentioned, downgrade to Java 15.

I had installed java using brew install --cask adoptopenjdk and today I decided to upgrade my installed apps... It automatically updated to java 16 and that broke the react native build.

That's what I did with brew:

brew uninstall adoptopenjdk
brew install --cask adoptopenjdk/openjdk/adoptopenjdk15

Just for reference, that's my installed and working version:
