The sed command can be used to replace an entire line with a new line. The "c" command to sed tells it to change the line. The sed command can be used to convert the lower case letters to upper case letters by using the transform "y" option.
sed is a stream editor. A stream editor is used to perform basic text transformations on an input stream (a file or input from a pipeline). While in some ways similar to an editor which permits scripted edits (such as ed ), sed works by making only one pass over the input(s), and is consequently more efficient.
Ignore case while replacing sed by default is case sensitive. To ignore the case -i flag can be used with sed command.
You should add the g
modifier so that sed performs a global substitution of the contents of the pattern buffer:
echo dog dog dos | sed -e 's:dog:log:g'
For a fantastic documentation on sed, check http://www.grymoire.com/Unix/Sed.html. This global flag is explained here: http://www.grymoire.com/Unix/Sed.html#uh-6
The official documentation for GNU sed
is available at http://www.gnu.org/software/sed/manual/
You have to put a g
at the end, it stands for "global":
echo dog dog dos | sed -r 's:dog:log:g'
