Open macOS system preferences and select the MySQL preference panel, and then execute Start MySQL Server. The Instances page includes an option to start or stop MySQL, and Initialize Database recreates the data/ directory.
mysql is found in /usr/local/mysql. Databases are stored in the data folder (/usr/local/mysql/data/databasename).
MySQL for macOS is available in a number of different forms: Native Package Installer, which uses the native macOS installer (DMG) to walk you through the installation of MySQL. For more information, see Chapter 2, Installing MySQL on macOS Using Native Packages. You can use the package installer with macOS.
Try typing "echo $PATH" on your terminal to see if /usr/local/mysql/bin is on the path. Additionally, on the terminal, you can type "which mysql". If that returns nothing your environment is not seeing your MySQL installation.

How did you install MySQL it if it didn't hook everything up correctly itself?

I don't run Homebrew on my machine, so I don't know if this is of much help as far as that goes.
I had the exact same problem and MattDiPasquale’s answer worked for me. I had to keep running mysqld all the time to ensure MySQL was running properly. When I looked at MySQL in the System Preferences I realised I had the same error.
