How can I get to know what my desktop environment is using Python? I like the result to be gnome or KDE or else.
Check which desktop environment you are using You can use the echo command in Linux to display the value of XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP variable in the terminal. While this command quickly tells you which desktop environment is being used, it doesn't give any other information.
The most common desktop environment on personal computers is Windows Shell in Microsoft Windows.
Since what you are looking for is the name of what Window Manager is in use, the only way I see how to get this is by looking in the process list. To do this there is a command called pgrep ( Wikipedia ).
