As DMG and PKG both are widely used for installation in Mac OSX. I have seen many DMG in the last decade, now I see more PKGs.
I need to ship an app that is around 100 MB, I am not sure what installation style should I choose.
So why people moved to PKGs from DMGs? Is there any Apple documentation that says what and when to use?
Another trick to find .dmg and .pkg files on Mac is to use Smart Folder in Finder. Right-click on the FInder’s icon in the Dock panel and select New Smart Folder. Click the + icon in the top right corner of the Finder’s window. You will see the list of all files on your Mac having the .dmg extension.
A dmg is a disk image, like an ISO. It can be used for storage but is also for distribution if there’s just one file (usually a .app file) to be moved to Applications. A pkg is a package installer which moves multiple files into place.
For the Macs, Miradore supports the deployment of application packages (PKGs) and Apple Business/School Manager apps. Sometimes you might come across a file in a DMG (Disk Image File) form that you need to repackage before deploying them to managed macOS devices.
DMG files – disk image files ( they are now often made without any disks, but earlier it worked like this) that are executed in a virtual image of the mounted drive. It is a kind of archive that is opened with a virtual drive. If you’ve ever installed applications not from the App Store, then you most likely downloaded its .dmg file.
If you need to run some scripts pre or post installation of your app, then pkgs need to be used. If you just need the app to be copied to Dmg
