I am currently using VMPlayer to host Windows 2008/SharePoint 2010. I created a virtual environment and I would like the ability to revert to snapshots or restore points.
Is this possible?
VMware Workstation Player doesn't support snapshots and you won't be able to find the appropriate option in the user interface of VMware Player. The only action you can do instead of taking a snapshot is suspending (pausing) the VM when it is in the running state and copying the VM files to another location.
Snapshots of powered-on or suspended VMs with independent disks are not supported.
The Virtual machine snapshots are the best way to clone the Virtual machine without any interruption; at the same time, we can use the snapshot to create multiple VM's. We can also consider that a VM snapshot is the copy of the disk file of our Virtual machine.
Do not use a single snapshot for more than 72 hours. The snapshot file continues to grow in size when it is retained for a longer period. This can cause the snapshot storage location to run out of space and impact the system performance.
However, VMware Player lacks many powerful features, such as Teams, multiple Snapshots and Clones, or Virtual Rights Management features for end-point security found in VMware Workstation and VMware ACE. Show activity on this post. You can mange snapshots with command line tool vmrun which comes with VmWare workstation.
To configure snapshot options for a selected virtual machine, select VM > Settings, click the Options tab, and select Snapshots. Table 1. Power off the virtual machine without making any changes to snapshots.
Snapshots can negatively affect the performance of a virtual machine. Performance degradation is based on how long the snapshot or snapshot tree is in place, the depth of the tree, and how much the virtual machine and its guest operating system have changed from the time you took the snapshot.
Quiesced snapshots require VMware Tools installation and guest operating system support. Snapshots are not supported with PCI vSphere DirectPath I/O devices. VMware does not support snapshots of virtual machines configured for bus sharing.
You can just pause the VM and make a copy the VM folder.
