Make sure you are clicking on the project file itself... Right click on the file and select "Open With" and select your visual studio program. It may need to be converted and if so, it will prompt you to convert the project.
Visual Basic.NET can be installed on a computer that has Visual Basic 6 installed, and both can run at the same time. Applications written in both VB6 and VB.NET can also be installed and executed on the same computer. Furthermore, components written in VB6 can be used in VB.NET projects.
VB6 is probably still widely used, but companies migrate to VB.NET. Moreover VB6 is so easy to learn that you can start using it really fast with no previous experience.
VB6 was interpreter based language while VB.NET is a compiled language. VB6 is non-object oriented principle based language. Whereas, VB.NET , from a coding style perspective looks similar to old VB6, but, has more power to it, just because it sits on the . Net platform.
There is one that comes with vb.net. When you open a .vbp vb6 project, it asks if you would like to automatically convert it to vb.net. It does a pretty good job, exclusive of third party add-ons.
