I'm considering asking Santa a Kindle Paperwhite.
My primary use would be to read scientific papers, mostly about physics, and with equations. These papers would be in PDF format, and often two columns.
What can I expect then ? Is there a need to convert/reformat the PDF firsts ? How does the kindle paperwhite display equations, and/or non roman alphabets ?
Any kindle are not recommended for reading research paper. I own the latest kindle and i still read research papers. The issue lies in screen size and screen refresh rate. You will need to zoom every page and move the page to read the whole page.
The Kindle isn't really made to deal with academic papers; they don't show up in (and won't sync with) your Amazon account. But you can add them to the “documents” folder on the device and they'll show up there without any conversion required. You can also organize them into folders.
The Amazon Kindle is the best device for reading. It has a special screen that doesn't strain your eyes and has a range of handy features for readers such as the ability to highlight passages and offline dictionaries.
With the Kindle app installed, you get full access to Amazon's library of textbooks and other reading materials, and since this iPad has built-in Wi-Fi, you can transfer PDF and ePUB files to the device wherever you are.
k2pdfopt is the most effective thing I've found, by far.
As mentioned, k2pdfopt is the best choice. To make it easier to use, I made this service for anyone want to read academic papers on kindle like me. Link: http://wooya.me/post/kindle-pdf-optimization-service/
