I have a basic Rails app running in docker. I can start it up just fine and serve responses. I can run rake -T
just fine. But I cannot run a Rails generate command. It fails telling me Could not find rake-12.3.1 in any of the sources
$ docker-compose run main bundle exec rails generate controller Welcome index
Starting cognitopoc_db_1 ... done
Could not find rake-12.3.1 in any of the sources
Run `bundle install` to install missing gems.
Here is my bundle env:
$ docker-compose run main bundle env
Starting cognitopoc_db_1 ... done

so why would I be able to run rake -T
bunt not rails generate
?
I started getting this error when I upgraded by Bitbucket pipeline containers to use the Ruby 2.5.1 container. While it may not address everyone's use case, I was able to get my rails (rake) commands to work by adding this to my bitbucket-pipelines.yml:
bundle install --binstubs
It's interesting that a few people started getting this same error about the same version of Rake right around the same time when bundling within docker-compose. I cannot say what caused it to happen, but I have found a solution that is working for me.
You could try executing the following commands to delete your Gemfile.lock
and .bundle
directory and re-bundle. I got this idea from this blog article: https://makandracards.com/makandra/1667-how-to-fix-gems-are-unavailable-although-they-are-installed
$ docker-compose exec main bash
$ rm -rf .bundle/
$ rm Gemfile.lock
$ bundle install
$ rails c # => This now works
