How do I type a QED symbol - I want a full box and not an empty box like \qed
gives you. (I'm not using \begin{proof}
)
Just drop \usepackage{ulsy} into the preamble of your document. Finally, as others have pointed out, the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbols List is a great resource for finding the perfect symbol for the job. Actually you need to \usepackage{amssymb} .
In AMS-LaTeX, the symbol is automatically appended at the end of a proof environment \begin{proof} ... \end{proof} . It can also be obtained from the commands \qedsymbol , \qedhere or \qed (the latter causes the symbol to be right aligned).
Do \usepackage{amsthm} and use \begin{proof}... \end{proof} for the proofs. The QED symbol will magically appear.
The code \times is used in LaTeX to make the symbol ×. The square root symbol is written using the command \sqrt{expression} . The n-th root is written using the command \sqrt[n]{expression} .
You can use \blacksquare
■:
When creating TeX, Knuth provided the symbol ■ (solid black square), also called by mathematicians tombstone or Halmos symbol (after Paul Halmos, who pioneered its use as an equivalent of Q.E.D.). The tombstone is sometimes open: □ (hollow black square).
