I need a function written in Excel VBA that will hash passwords using a standard algorithm such as SHA-1. Something with a simple interface like:

The function needs to work on an XP workstation with Excel 2003 installed, but otherwise must use no third party components. It can reference and use DLLs that are available with XP, such as CryptoAPI.
Does anyone know of a sample to achieve this hashing functionality?
A hash is an output string that resembles a pseudo random sequence, and is essentially unique for any string that is used as its starting value. Hashes cannot be easily cracked to find the string that was used in their making and they are very sensitive to input change.
If you prefer using a single Excel function to generate an MD5 hash, you can use Phil Fresle's VBA source code. By adding this as a class in your Excel file, you'll be able to use the function “md5hash” to generate MD5 hashed values for any cell value.
Password hashing is used to verify the integrity of your password, sent during login, against the stored hash so that your actual password never has to be stored. Not all cryptographic algorithms are suitable for the modern industry.
Here's a module for calculating SHA1 hashes that is usable for Excel formulas eg. '=SHA1HASH("test")'. To use it, make a new module called 'module_sha1' and copy and paste it all in. This is based on some VBA code from http://vb.wikia.com/wiki/SHA-1.bas, with changes to support passing it a string, and executable from formulas in Excel cells.

These days, you can leverage the .NET library from VBA. The following works for me in Excel 2016. Returns the hash as uppercase hex.
