Karma Webpack sourcemaps not working

I'm using Karma-Webpack to run my Angular 2 specs.

https://github.com/webpack/karma-webpack

When I execute tests using karma in Chrome, the source files for my specs appear readable in the debugger. However, the system under test files (my application source) is unreadable.

I'm using the karma-sourcemap-loader and have devtool set to 'inline-source-map' as instructed. What could be causing this problem?

This build is modeled after the AngularClass angular2-webpack-starter. https://github.com/AngularClass/angular2-webpack-starter

The issue comes from the istanbul-instrumenter-loader.

One solution is to configure karma and webpack to skip code coverage instrumentation when running tests in watch mode.

Based on the latest version in the angular2-webpack-starter repo, you can modify the following 2 files:

karma.conf.js

/**
 * @author: @AngularClass
 */

const autowatch = process.env.npm_lifecycle_script.indexOf('--auto-watch') !== -1;

module.exports = function(config) {
  var testWebpackConfig = require('./webpack.test.js')({env: 'test'});

  var configuration = {

    // base path that will be used to resolve all patterns (e.g. files, exclude)
    basePath: '',

    /*
     * Frameworks to use
     *
     * available frameworks: https://npmjs.org/browse/keyword/karma-adapter
     */
    frameworks: ['jasmine'],

    // list of files to exclude
    exclude: [ ],

    /*
     * list of files / patterns to load in the browser
     *
     * we are building the test environment in ./spec-bundle.js
     */
    files: [ { pattern: './config/spec-bundle.js', watched: false } ],

    /*
     * preprocess matching files before serving them to the browser
     * available preprocessors: https://npmjs.org/browse/keyword/karma-preprocessor
     */
    // skip coverage in watch mode
    preprocessors: { './config/spec-bundle.js': autowatch ? ['webpack', 'sourcemap'] : ['coverage', 'webpack', 'sourcemap'] },

    // Webpack Config at ./webpack.test.js
    webpack: testWebpackConfig,

    // Webpack please don't spam the console when running in karma!
    webpackServer: { noInfo: true },

    /*
     * test results reporter to use
     *
     * possible values: 'dots', 'progress'
     * available reporters: https://npmjs.org/browse/keyword/karma-reporter
     */
    reporters: [ 'mocha'],

    // web server port
    port: 9876,

    // enable / disable colors in the output (reporters and logs)
    colors: true,

    /*
     * level of logging
     * possible values: config.LOG_DISABLE || config.LOG_ERROR || config.LOG_WARN || config.LOG_INFO || config.LOG_DEBUG
     */
    logLevel: config.LOG_INFO,

    // enable / disable watching file and executing tests whenever any file changes

    /*
     * Continuous Integration mode
     * if true, Karma captures browsers, runs the tests and exits
     */
    singleRun: true
  };

  if (process.env.TRAVIS){
    configuration.browsers = ['ChromeTravisCi'];
  }

          exclude: [
            /\.(e2e|spec)\.ts$/,
            /node_modules/
          ]
        });
  }

  return config;
}

Now, you should be able to see the source Typescript file when running npm run watch:test.

This looks a whole lot like this Stack Overflow question, and so it may indeed have the same solution.

WebPack, by default, doesn't pass source maps up to Karma unless the file extension is .js (or .jsx if you're using React). In a setup like this one, Karma+WebPack just transpiles the .ts files (or .tsx) straight from TypeScript to JavaScript and serves them under the same file name.

I found a solution that worked for me on the GitHub Issues page for karma-webpack. The trick is to inject webpack.SourceMapDevToolPlugin with a widened file filter into the webpack config. For you, that should look something like this:

var webpack = require('webpack');
// in your config.set:
plugins: [
  // existing plugins go here
  new webpack.SourceMapDevToolPlugin({
    filename: null, // if no value is provided the sourcemap is inlined
    test: /\.(ts|js)($|\?)/i // process .js and .ts files only
  })
]

Give that a try and see if it doesn't fix the problem.
