I heard a lot about makefiles and how they simplify the compilation process. I'm using VS2008. Can somebody please suggest some online references or books where I can find out more about how to deal with them?

If your installation of make is not available in the default path, you can configure it in VS Code at File > Preferences > Settings > Extensions makefile. To compile and link the project, you can add a Makefile to the root of the project folder. It will be detected automatically by the extension.
The Visual Studio build tools include a C compiler that you can use to create everything from basic console programs to full Windows Desktop applications, mobile apps, and more.
Makefiles are not obsolete, in the same way that text files are not obsolete. Storing all data in plain text is not always the right way of doing things, but if all you want is a Todo List then a plain text file is fine.
The Microsoft Program Maintenance Utility (NMAKE.EXE) is a tool that builds projects based on commands contained in a description file.

You can use makefiles in VS, but when you do it bypasses all the built-in functionality in MSVC's IDE. Makefiles are basically the reinterpret_cast of the builder. IMO the simplest thing is just to use Solutions.
