openConnection(); Create a cookie string: String myCookie = "userId=igbrown"; Add the cookie to a request: Using the setRequestProperty(String name, String value); method, we will add a property named "Cookie", passing the cookie string created in the previous step as the property value.
URLConnection is the base class. HttpURLConnection is a derived class which you can use when you need the extra API and you are dealing with HTTP or HTTPS only. HttpsURLConnection is a 'more derived' class which you can use when you need the 'more extra' API and you are dealing with HTTPS only.
You can get output stream for the connection and write the parameter query string to it.

One solution is to make your own params string.
This is the actual method I've been using for my latest project. You need to change args from hashtable to namevaluepair's:

You can use the method UrlEncodedFormEntity.writeTo(OutputStream).

formEntity.writeTo(output);

The accepted answer throws a ProtocolException at:
OutputStream os = conn.getOutputStream();
because it does not enable the output for the URLConnection object. The solution should include this:
conn.setDoOutput(true);
to make it work.
