I've been digging through the mplayer/mencoder and ffmpeg documentation and I can't seem to come up with anything. I'm not especially picky as to the output format as I can use a regular expression to pull it out, I just can't seem to get the data in the first place.

Right-click the file and click Properties. Click the Details or Summary tab. In the Details under Video, you will see the frame width and frame height, and additional important video information.
Even simpler, you can right-click on the file name in Windows Explorer, select Properties, then look at the Detail tab, you will see the vertical resolution. If it is less than 720, your file is either 720p or 480p, while if it is greater than 720, the file will be at least 1080p.
Use ffprobe (part of FFmpeg toolkit)
