Gradle connectedAndroidTest fails with "No tests found." but outputs test results

Recently we started to add tests to our Android app project. We started of using Robolectric but have recently had to pull that out and just use the plain tests instead due to an issue we encountered with Couchbase. Before adding Couchbase our tests worked perfectly well when running with Roblectric.

From a new branch that doesn't have Couchbase in it I am pulling out Robolectric and changing over to using the standard connected tests. I've pulled out Robolectric, and I have all our tests working again. The HTML test report generates correctly with all the results we would expect. If a test fails the console accurately reflects which test failed and why.

The issue we we are having is that even though all the tests are working again (and passing) the testing fails with the following message:

com.android.builder.testing.ConnectedDevice > hasTests[Nexus 4 - 4.4.4] FAILED
No tests found.
:libraries:Android-ZXing-Lib:connectedAndroidTest FAILED

FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.

* What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':libraries:Android-ZXing-Lib:connectedAndroidTest'.
> There were failing tests. See the report at: file:///Users/MyAccount/Git%20Repos/MyProject/libraries/Android-ZXing-Lib/build/outputs/reports/androidTests/connected/index.html

* Try:
Run with --stacktrace option to get the stack trace. Run with --info or --debug option to get more log output.

BUILD FAILED

Running with the --stacktrace I can see it is definitely coming from that library.

Is there a way for me to not have conectedAndroidTest run on libraries which we don't maintain?

You can run gradlew :app:connectedAndroidTest (where app is the directory name of the app module), which will only run your app's tests.

In our case, the accepted answer didn't help.

Our tests were starting perfectly fine if we run them from Android Studio but Gradle failed to find them if we run any type of connectedCheck using both Android Gradle Plugin and a command in terminal.

We found the needed information int the official docs. Regardless of the fact, that usual Instrumented test run without problems, we needed to add an explicit dependency to test runner:

androidTestImplementation 'com.android.support.test:runner:1.0.1'

// Or this one for Android Gradle Plugin 3.+
// androidTestImplementation 'com.android.support.test:runner:1.0.1'
