Does anyone know the maximum valid length for each of Facebook's open graph meta tags?
The description of the meta tags on http://ogp.me/ does not list maximum lengths, only general descriptions such as "A one to two sentence description of your object" for the og:description meta tag.
From what I understand, there is no maximum content length for meta tags in general, just recommendations to keep them under certain lengths for SEO reasons.
I'd be curious to know if there is a hard limit and what the limits are for what is visible on a link posted to Facebook.
There is no official limit on the number of meta keywords you can have. Each search engine sets their own rules. However, it is a good practice to have less than 10% of the total words of a page. If for example your page has 300 words it is better to have maximum 30 words in your meta keyword tag.
What are Open Graph meta tags? Open Graph meta tags are snippets of code that control how URLs are displayed when shared on social media. They're part of Facebook's Open Graph protocol and are also used by other social media sites, including LinkedIn and Twitter (if Twitter Cards are absent).
Og: description tags don't limit you to a character count, but it's best to use around 200 letters. In some cases, depending on a link/title/domain, Facebook can display up to 300 characters, but I suggest treating anything above 200 as something extra.
The og:description stands for the Open Graph description. It's a short description what the page is about, similar to the meta description. When optimizing your snippet for Facebook, keep in mind that the description will not fit on one line if it's longer than 55–60 characters.
There isn't a hard limit on the data you can put there, but in various rendering places Facebook will limit it. The limit in news feed is different from the limit in Ticker which is different than the limit on timeline.
Just put the correct content in there and we'll truncate it when rendering.
In my testing:
og:title
40 chars
og:description
has 2 max lengths:
When the link is used in a Post, it's 300 chars. When a link is used in a Comment, it's 110 chars.
So you can either treat it as 110, or, write your Descriptions to 300 but make sure the first 110 is the critical part and still makes sense when it gets cut off.
