I've written a test class for a Spring MVC controller by following the "Testing the Spring MVC slice" section described here. The class looks like this:

The "Full authentication is required to access this resource" error is mentioned here, and it suggests a couple workarounds. I tried changing the annotations on my test class to the following:

Then I found another page that suggested using the @AutoConfigureMockMvc annotation to solve the "Full authentication is required to access this resource" error, so I changed the annotations to:

But it resulted in the same "No qualifying bean found for dependency [org.springframework.security.config.annotation.ObjectPostProcessor]: expected at least 1 bean which qualifies as autowire candidate" as the previous error. I even emailed the author of that article and he replied saying he's never seen this error.
Can anyone explain why the @WebMvcTest annotation isn't working for me?
By default, tests annotated with @WebMvcTest will also auto-configure Spring Security and MockMvc (include support for HtmlUnit WebClient and Selenium WebDriver). For more fine-grained control of MockMVC the @AutoConfigureMockMvc annotation can be used.
Spring Boot provides a @SpringBootTest annotation, which can be used as an alternative to the standard spring-test @ContextConfiguration annotation when you need Spring Boot features. The annotation works by creating the ApplicationContext used in your tests through SpringApplication .
The @SpringBootTest annotation is useful when we need to bootstrap the entire container. The annotation works by creating the ApplicationContext that will be utilized in our tests. We can use the webEnvironment attribute of @SpringBootTest to configure our runtime environment; we're using WebEnvironment.
@WebMvcTest annotation is used for Spring MVC tests. It disables full auto-configuration and instead applies only configuration relevant to MVC tests. The WebMvcTest annotation auto-configure MockMvc instance as well. Using EmployeeRESTController.
Give a look at your project and ensure it doesn't have the @ComponentScan annotation. I had problem with it and @WebMvcTest just like you had. I have mine working like this:

The @WebMvcTest#secure
property is true
by default. If you have spring-security-test
as a test dependency, then spring security will take affect during the test (which can be switched off by setting WebMvcTest#secure
to false
). However, if your controller is making use of Authentication
or its principal, you'll probably have failing tests.
So, you can make use of @org.springframework.security.test.context.support.WithMockUser
which will create an authenticated user with username user
and password password
. In doing so, your test should no longer fail because of authentication (but possibly with authorization).
