I'm using DataSet to connect my C# program with SQL database. I want one of the columns to be an enumeration and I want it to act as an enum in my code. How can I do this?
Enumeration or Enum in C is a special kind of data type defined by the user. It consists of constant integrals or integers that are given names by a user. The use of enum in C to name the integer values makes the entire program easy to learn, understand, and maintain by the same or even different programmer.
An enum type is a special data type that enables for a variable to be a set of predefined constants. The variable must be equal to one of the values that have been predefined for it. Common examples include compass directions (values of NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, and WEST) and the days of the week.
By default, when an enum is a part of an entity, JPA maps its values into numbers using the ordinal() method. What it means is that without customizations JPA stores enum value as numbers. These numbers are associated with the order in which you define values in the enum.
An enumerated type is a type whose legal values consist of a fixed set of constants. Common examples include compass directions, which take the values North, South, East and West and days of the week, which take the values Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
I don't mean to burst everyone's bubble, but you can easily map an integer to an Enum using a Strongly Typed DataSet. I do it all the time. Rather than type the whole thing out here I have created an entry on my Blog describing in detail how to accomplish this.
