I want to update the description of the app plus the screenshots on play store but the app remains the same viz same version number(I don't want to publish new app since nothing in app is changed)
Is that possible or will google ask for app to be updated as well.

Your short description is the first text users see when looking at your app's detail page on the Play Store app and can be expanded by users to view your app's full description.
Use the long description to explain your main features and point out other features. The full description is there and you should make use of it, really describe your app features, and how the person can use your app.
How long does it take to publish an app on Google Play? Google says the review process could take up to 7 days or even longer. But usually, it takes up to 2 days. Please, keep in mind that it may take a few days to fill in all the necessary information in the Google Developer account before submitting the application.
You can update the description and can change screenshot also and your app will remain same only the description and screen will be updated within two hours, and you don't need to update apk.
google will never ask to update the apk file when you change description or distribution. below is the screen shot where yoiu have to edit description and change screen shot.

You can edit the app description and screenshots without updating the application itself. Just go to "Store Listing" in the Android developer console, make your changes, and save them.
