I have been using Gifs for those small loading images. Have been working great except the occasional transparency issues and 8 bit colors. Now I found out about the APNG recently. But don't know if i should be using it. Does it have enough browser support? And what about the file size. A large gif image already has large file size...
APNG files are Animated Portable Network Graphics, or to put it simply, animated PNG files. APNG files support 24 bit color as well as 24 bit transparency. A GIF file has an 8 bit transparency. What that means is that APNG files can handle color better and look a lot smoother when transparent.
GIF is a good choice for simple images and animations, although converting full color images to GIF can result in unsatisfactory dithering. Typically, modern content should use PNG for lossless and indexed still images, and should consider using APNG for lossless animation sequences.
First of all, an animated GIF stores each of its frames as individual GIF images that combined create the illusion of motion, so you actually have more images moving, just like in the early ages of cartoons. GIFs use a lossless compression algorithm, so no information is lost by compressing the pixel data.
Disadvantages of GIF files. The GIF file format only supports a palette of 256 colors, meaning images may have a low resolution or even look slightly blurry. Because they use multiple images, animated GIF files can sometimes be tricky to return to and edit.
I think APNG is better. As it supports 24-bit and 8-bit transparency. Moreover it is also supported by browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Safari (see https://caniuse.com/#feat=apng).
