Anti-entropy protocols are a form of gossip protocols. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gossip_protocol. I was wondering if someone could explain, the the significance of word entropy here.
According to the internet and my science-minded friends, entropy is defined by the second law of thermodynamics. Basically, ordered systems tend toward a higher state of entropy over time; therefore, the higher the entropy, the greater the disorder. We are against disorder in our time series data, hence anti-entropy.
Entropy is the tendency of systems to become increasingly disordered. Consul's anti-entropy mechanisms are designed to counter this tendency, to keep the state of the cluster ordered even through failures of its components.
The noise creeping into the messages can be seen as a form of growing entropy in the message content. Cancelling the noise (in this case by comparing multiple replicas of the original message) is a form of entropy lowering process (i.e. an anti-entropy process, since entropy is never decreasing on its own).
