Has anyone experimented with several of the above readers? Is one more reliable than another? Easier to use? Are the commercial ones more stable? Which one would you recommend or avoid?

In the iPhone 7 Plus you can read or scan QR codes without having to download any application since the code reader is included in the software of the camera.
iPhones with iOS 11 and above have an in-built QR Code scanner that can be accessed via the native camera app or the Control Panel. To view the QR Code scanner on iPhone, click on the Camera icon and point to a QR Code to view the information.
You can use Camera or the Code Scanner to scan Quick Response (QR) codes for links to websites, apps, coupons, tickets, and more. The camera automatically detects and highlights a QR code.
I have used ZBar and Zxing.. the Best is Zbar!
