What's the difference between {} and [] in MATLAB?

Question

>> A={1 2;2 3}

A = 

    [1]    [2]
    [2]    [3]
>> A=[1 2;2 3]

A =

     1     2
     2     3

It seems to me they are essentially the same thing?

{}'s are for cells. []'s are for arrays/matrices.
