The decibel (symbol: dB) is a relative unit of measurement equal to one tenth of a bel (B). It expresses the ratio of two values of a power or root-power quantity on a logarithmic scale.
The first databases appear to have used storage drums which where giant cylinders and it is very likely that when they represented them on paper diagrams they would use a cylinder to be the database.
I know this isn't exactly a technical question, but I have never understood what is meant by the database symbol as a stack of nickles. I have a feeling this same question is going to be asked by future generations about the symbol for save being a floppy disk.
