What is the actual difference between the GraphicsMagick and the ImageMagick libraries (source to compare list or article needed)?
GraphicsMagick provides a set of command-line applications to manipulate image files. It is a fork of the ImageMagick project and therefore offers a similar set of features, but puts a larger emphasis on stability.
Use ImageMagick® to create, edit, compose, or convert digital images. It can read and write images in a variety of formats (over 200) including PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, SVG, PDF, DPX, EXR and TIFF.
GM is available for free, and may be used to support both open and proprietary applications. GM is distributed under an X11-style license (MIT License), approved by the Open Source Initiative, recommended for use by the OSSCC, and compatible with the GNU GPL.
ImageMagick includes a number of command-line utilities for manipulating images. Most of you are probably accustomed to editing images one at a time with a graphical user interface (GUI) with such programs as Gimp or Photoshop.
GraphicsMagick is fork project software of ImageMagick and focused on stabilization of both Command line options and Programming API. After the 5.5.2 version of ImageMagick due to difference among developers’ group GraphicsMagick branched off in 2002.
ImageMagick does not have a robust graphical user interface to edit images as do Adobe Photoshop and GIMP, but does include – for Unix-like operating systems – a basic native X Window GUI (called IMDisplay) for rendering and manipulating images and API libraries for many programming languages.
ImageMagicK is used in Wordpress, so thus the superior numbers. does not mean its the best choice, its just there before GM and large organisations are not bothered about image optimisation space. I would appreciate upvotes to the truth in the answer and not opinionated views.
GraphicsIMagick can process over 89 major file formats of image for making it accessible with number of sources and among these format some of the important formats are .gif, .jpeg, jpeg-2000, .png, .pdf, .dpx, . pnm, .tiff, .webp.
The GraphicsMagick homepage has a list of differences. But it might be a bit biased. In general, GraphicsMagick seems to be faster (see e.g. this article), with a more stable API and less bugs. Many big websites uses it instead of ImageMagick.
