I'm trying to figure out what all these "\e6##" references mean. Is "\e" some sort of special character?
.icon-logo-mark:before {

The HPV E6 and the E7 proteins modulate cellular proteins that regulate the cell cycle (reviewed in references 35 and 38). The E6 protein binds to the p53 tumor suppressor protein and targets it for accelerated ubiquitin-mediated degradation. The E6 protein also stimulates telomerase activity in cultured keratinocytes.
The prominent function of HPV E6 is the proteolytic inactivation of certain pro-apoptotic factors, such as p53, Bak or Bax, through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (10, 11). The Bcl-2 family of proteins is a critical death regulator of mitochondrial integrity and of mitochondria-initiated apoptosis.
The most important function of the E6 protein is to promote the degradation of p53 through its interaction with a cellular protein, E6-associated protein (E6AP), an E3 ubiquitin ligase. The affinity of E6AP for p53 is likely to be modified by the association with E6.
HPV E6 and E7 target another vital oncogene, c-myc, which has been claimed as a marker protein for several cancer forms, including cervical cancer. When disrupted by E6/E7, it has been found to disrupt cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cellular transformation.
Put simply, they're Unicode references. The "\e601", for example, is the hex code 0xe601. If you go here: http://unicodelookup.com/#0xe601/1 you'll see that the entry for that character is totally blank. It's in a part of the Unicode character set reserved for "private" use. Meaning icon libraries and the like can place whatever they want in those spots and not have to worry about overriding common characters like those of any of the alphabets of the world or a Chinese character, for instance.
