I have a piece of code looking like this :

Sometimes it crashes :

I have no clue why it crashes. obj is not null (and if it was it would not be a problem, would it ?).
What could be the reason for a dynamic cast to crash ?
If it can't cast, it should just return NULL no ?
If a dynamic_cast fails, the result of the conversion will be a null pointer. Because we haven't checked for a null pointer result, we access d->getName(), which will try to dereference a null pointer, leading to undefined behavior (probably a crash).
While typeid + static_cast is faster than dynamic_cast , not having to switch on the runtime type of the object is faster than any of them.
For example, dynamic_cast uses RTTI and the following program fails with the error “cannot dynamic_cast `b' (of type `class B*') to type `class D*' (source type is not polymorphic) ” because there is no virtual function in the base class B.
dynamic_cast runs at about 14.4953 nanoseconds. Checking a virtual method and static_cast ing runs at about twice the speed, 6.55936 nanoseconds.
Some possible reasons for the crash:
obj
points to an object with a non-polymorphic type (a class or struct with no virtual methods, or a fundamental type).obj
points to an object that has been freed.obj
points to unmapped memory, or memory that has been mapped in such a way as to generate an exception when accessed (such as a guard page or inaccessible page).obj
points to an object with a polymorphic type, but that type was defined in an external library that was compiled with RTTI disabled.Not all of these problems necessarily cause a crash in all situations.
