I am retired so have the time to answer questions. I am nowhere near the best or the most knowledgeable programmer who visits this site but I have the time and the patience to bother with some of the less well structured questions. In addition, I remember techniques that are now out of fashion but are still appropriate for some problems.

Throughout my working life, 1968 – 2010, I always worked with computers - firstly for manufacturers, then a distributor, then a consultancy and finally for a large user – at every level from programmer to senior management.
