Shameless plug: If you want to get paid to write complex R packages for a living, I'm working at a startup right now doing exactly that and deploying hundreds of models to Amazon's EC2, auto-scaled using ElasticBeanStalk (so our analytics can never fail to scale!).

I also use test-driven development (R's testthat and testthatsomemore), continuous integration (travis), massive datasets (h2o, redshift), rigorous package development (devtools and CMD CHECK), and difficult meta-programming (duck typing over arbitrary OOP types?--all in R.
