About

I began life as a software engineer working for a communications company working on a proprietary RTOS written in assembler and C, solving problems that no-one else could. I moved on from there to 68000 based hardware technologies managed by RTOS like AMX before switching to application level development on Unix then migrating to windows based application level development after that.

While I have broad OS experience I consistently find myself reverse engineering or focusing on complex, low level real-time and multithreaded design particularly involving communications over various media but especially IP (TCP/UDP). I am therefore expert in multi-threaded, multitasking and performance critical development using OS API's like Win32, VxWorks and linux. These days I can do pretty much anything in software. Perhaps exemplified after writing a cgi-bin capable, RFC compliant web-server on VxWorks from the ground up; or after developing a Win32 kernel wrapper (a bit like WINE) for the same Linux-like OS; or after writing an SQL database server that supported rudimentary fail-over, before such Cloud-like technology ever became the norm.

First and foremost I am an inventor. Being practical and analytical makes me an excellent problem solver. I therefore aspire to both design and support positions. With over two decades of real customer focused experience I understand the need for pragmatism, attention to detail, delivery efficiency, quality and more recently cybersecurity. That experience and deep familiarity with real-time, hardware drivers, communications, databases, scripting, revision control, release procedures, operating systems, the web and IP makes me extremely versatile, adaptable and productive, particularly when taking on new technologies and methodologies.
