I'm a spatial ecologist that time-travelled from the future because I caught myself in the rut of "I really have no idea what I'm doing" and I needed to come back a few years (decades) to ask basic questions. We still use R, Open Science is the rule rather than the exception, but we still haven't figured out how to get the very last of the peanut butter from the bottom of the jar.
