I've been working in the software industry since the late 80s, with diversions into medical sciences, law, and teaching. My earliest professional experience was implementing power control systems using Ladder Diagram Language on GEM Microcontrollers; since then I've worked extensively in C, C++, and Java, but I can get by with other programming languages and technologies if I have to. Mostly I work on Java-based middleware systems these days, but I've always had a particular interest in running Linux on embedded systems. Now, of course, that is a mainstream application. I work for a large US software company, but I also take on development and consultancy work for medical and legal clients.
Outside of work I am usually to be found in my woodland, wielding axe and chainsaw. Other than forestry, my main leisure interest is composing and performing music for the piano. I live on the outskirts of London with my family.
