I've spent the past 25 years mastering (not sure that word can be used anymore) the Oracle technology space. I started with Oracle 7, learning and burning from the ground up. As the first Oracle DBA at Best Buy, I was able to learn by making a ton of mistakes, the best experience one could ask for. I have mastered most of the the Oracle critical functions (Administration, Backup and Recovery (RMAN), Disaster Recovery (Dataguard), Performance Tuning, High Availability (RAC), Monitoring (Enterprise Manager/Cloud Control), etc). I've worked on databases ranging from a few hundred gigs to 55+ TB.
The past several years, while continuing to be a lead for Oracle, I'm working on mastering Datastax Enterprise (Cassandra). I've been the lead DSE administrator for Best Buy. I have been certified in DSE 5.0 and am working on DSE 6.x of late. I've also started dabbling in Azure Cosmos DB with the SQL (Document DB) and Cassandra APIs.
I've also started, designed, developed and implemented multiple internet businesses - some somewhat successful, most not - but the learning from doing all of the above is well worth it.
Some highlights of my career (some repeated from above):
Programming: * I have extensive programming backgrounds in C (25+ years), ksh (25+ years), java (10+ years), HTML (15+ years), Javascript (15+years), php (5 years), etc.
Oracle: * I spent several years as a consultant, some of that time at Oracle corp. * I have owned several small companies and continue to have one that I'm heavily involved with. * I have taught public classes on a variety of Oracle and Operating System topics. * Occasional consulting mentoring * For my latest off-hours project, I'm the DBA, web developer, designer, architect, UNIX admin, network admin, HTML/CGI coder/designer, security-admin, etc. * Most DBA related activities for the past 25 years - Backup/Recovery - RAC - Performance analysis/tuning - Monitoring - Dataguard (DR) - Administration - Trouble-shooting - Networking - Design
I love all of the above!
