About

I am a software developer with over 25 years experience, beginning with IBM mainframe technologies in the late 1980s. I made a transition to microcomputer programming in the 1990s and since then have been focused mainly on the Microsoft .Net stack. I have held a wide variety of positions within development organizations from entry level programmer, through team leads, manager, director, VP and CTO.

My specialty is architectural design and development of software. I am a strong advocate of the philosophy that 50% of a typical system should be reusable - and hence not need to be redeveloped when the next project for the same technology stack is developed.

I also believe that software systems, especially large, complex, mission critical systems should be easy to manage through the implementation of good visibility and control mechanisms. For this we need to build in visibility, control and metrics for trending - as part of the original, planned development work. It is amazing what a system will tell you if you give it a chance - things you are looking for and things you are not looking for. Also, it is much better to see and respond to operational trends (approaching thresholds) than having to react when a system hits the wall - never much fun.

Although I have worked in many management roles, I have always stayed very technical and have endeavored to remain as current and broad as possible. Obviously, this has become increasingly difficult as technology continues to become more pervasive.

Never a chance of getting bored.
