I am a total learning machine, adapting new concepts & paradigms quickly. I keep a 7-machine cluster in my garage, which I break frequently with bleeding edge software, then repair/revert. I am as interested in the "why" & "how" something works, similar to a complete understanding of a high-performance engine, not just driving the car.
I co-founded & was CEO/Chief Architect at Blue Triangle Technologies, a groundbreaking SaaS-based Enterprise ECommerce analytics package that showed our customers where their end users because dissatisfied with their experience, what templates were not achieving their revenue potential, & the annualized amount of unrealized revenue -- yes, lost revenue -- by category. This allowed Developers & Operations a justification for increased budget, & also provided a CFO/CIO a project list with the ROI for each project. Lastly, Blue Triangle utilized a Customer Success Model, providing expert analysis to each customer on a weekly basis, with additional time available. Nothing makes Blue Triangle happier than seeing their customer improve a single, often non-obvious page on the site & quickly see high ROI. Eg., one large hospitality chain followed Blue Triangle's methodology, improved a single page to reduce the user perceived load time by 0.26 seconds, & within 2 days, management observed the realized revenue increased by $55 million annually. Later I hired a replacement CEO, & moved on.
I am a recognized leader in the Dev/Ops & Performance Management space, with over 20 years of Operations management experience & over 10 years of Performance Consulting management experience. I am a frequent public/conference speaker having spoken at many conferences such as Cloud Connect, Velocity, Networld/Interop, GIPC, CMG, eTail, et. al., as well as being a technical reviewer for O'Reilly. As Director of Dev/Ops at Velogic, a start-up company acquired by Keynote Systems in 2000, I designed the load testing cluster management system, scaling to thousands of nodes in a multi-vendor, 20+ geographically dispersed data centers, generating over a two Terabits of traffic in globally distributed load tests. At Keynote, I was Global Director of Performance Consulting services, managing the business unit, SOX compliance, P&L, sales, engineering, product management, product marketing, Dev/Ops, & consulting teams responsible for the service delivery & performance tuning work for companies with heavily trafficked sites.
Without the benefit of today's in-Memory databases, we built out a massively parallel OLAP system with more than 64,000 CPUs to return load test results & analysis in real time. We will be forever grateful for the ideas from thinking about SETI@Home, even though we never saw a line of their code. Before this, I ported lots of Solaris code to Linux, wrote serial drivers for early versions of the Linux kernel, wrote distributed MUDs, hold an original RHCE certification, & graduated Cum Laude from the University of Phoenix.
