About

I'm a freelance web developer. Check out a living, breathing museum of my recent work on my personal site: https://websitesforhumans.com. It's a quick casual stroll past all the work I'm most proud of. You're free to scroll and click about on each of them, switch from Desktop to Mobile, etc., without actually having to load them up in another tab.

I deeply customize WordPress, building custom plugins, custom blocks, and custom themes. After building hundreds of sites with Drupal and WordPress, I have a great deal of knowledge about how to do things "the right way" on each of the two platforms, and on pretty much all PHP-based CMS websites.

I put effort, concern, and consideration into my work, and I won't ever make a mess for someone else to clean up. I always follow standards, I use hooks and filters, I NEVER "hack" plugins or core, and I write clean, well documented, easy-to-read code.

Unordered list:

  • CSS is my jam, everything about it just clicks for me and it doesn't even really feel like work most of the time. I almost always use SASS/SCSS.
  • Everything I do looks just as the designer intended. I'm proud of compliments from designers who often thank me for doing a good job implementing their work.
  • I always think about things from a user's perspective and I'm meticulous about
    • Writing clearly, understandably, and accessibly at all times, in documentation, prompting and error messaging for users on the front end and in the admin panel
    • Providing a clean UI in WordPress for administrators, free of the needless clutter of poorly conceived third party plugins and themes. All the features you need, nothing you don't.
    • Building plugins and themes "The WordPress Way" – currently, this means a lot of creating structures out of existing Gutenberg blocks, mixed with building some custom blocks.
  • jQuery is fun and quick, but I can also hold my own in good old JavaScript when jQuery isn't in the mix, or I'm comfortable working with really any well-documented framework.
  • PHP is wonderful, forgiving and friendly, I feel lucky to work with it. I've used APIs to build bridges between dozens of different services, and I've added a wide variety of custom functionality to WordPress. Always looking for the next challenge, I love to learn new things, and I keep up to date with the latest and best services to integrate.
  • Adobe CS Suite – I'm mostly familiar with Photoshop and Illustrator. Can do retouching and effects in Photoshop.
  • I'm experienced in LAMP Server configuration and administration, DNS configuration, and everything else that's necessary to deploy a web project from start to finish.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Film and Media Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara. I also play the saxophone and bass, and I'm a vocalist. In my spare time, I like making films and playing music.
