I started my career in converting K&R C to ANSI C in an internet startup. Loved Linux and the OSS ways and it's really amazing how much knowledge still helps me today.
Then the internet bubble burst, and I sold my soul to Microsoft. Although C# isn't half bad since its matured quite a bit.
Today I still adhere to my OSS roots and believe that all information should be shared. Microsoft is still playing catch up to ideas that have been around for quite some time. And that is how to remain successful.
