In an attempt to upgrade spring boot to the latest version 2.1.1 & spring framework to 5.1.3 in a java based web application, I get the following error
Invalid bean definition with name 'org.springframework.transaction.config.internalTransactionalEventListenerFactory' defined in null

The issue was suppressed by turning on bean overriding that was by default disabled in spring boot 2.1.0 RELEASE
spring.main.allow-bean-definition-overriding=true
After this workaround, the application startup fails with an OOM error as below
Application run failed java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Requested array size exceeds VM limit
Bean Overriding Spring beans are identified by their names within an ApplicationContext. Therefore, bean overriding is a default behavior that happens when we define a bean within an ApplicationContext that has the same name as another bean. It works by simply replacing the former bean in case of a name conflict.
Here, @Bean instantiates two beans with ids the same as the method names and registers them within the BeanFactory (Spring container) interface. Next, we can initialize the Spring container and request any of the beans from the Spring container. This strategy also makes it simple to achieve dependency injection.
Bean aliasing allows us to override already configured beans and to substitute them with a different object definition. This is most useful when the bean definitions are inherited from an external resource, which is out of our control. In the following example, I will show you how bean aliasing works.
I was having a similar problem with my tests after an update to Spring Boot 2.1. In my case was solved setting the property spring.main.allow-bean-definition-overriding
to true
