I have a corpus of text that I'm parsing with a regular expression to find the most common words. Currently I'm using .match(/(?!'.*')\b\[\w'\]+\b/g)
. My problem is that \w
does not match on non-alphanumeric characters and my emoji never get parsed. Specifically, I'm trying to make a regex that will identify words (including contractions) and emoji, separating on the word boundary.
As an example I'd like to be able to take "Hey there! π, let's go to the moon ππ"
and get
Array( "Hey", "there", "π", "let's", "go", "to", "the", "moon", "π", "π")
If we had used the regular expression is, it would have matched the is in This. Word boundaries, as described above, are supported by most regular expression flavors. Notable exceptions are the POSIX and XML Schema flavors, which donβt support word boundaries at all.
If your regular expression needs to match characters before or after \y, you can easily specify in the regex whether these characters should be word characters or non-word characters. If you want to match any word, \y\w+\y gives the same result as \m.+\M.
There are three different positions that qualify as word boundaries: 1 Before the first character in the string, if the first character is a word character. 2 After the last character in the string, if the last character is a word character. 3 Between two characters in the string, where one is a word character and the other is not a word character.
β\bβ: A word boundary. Boundaries are needed for special cases. For example, in βMy thesis is greatβ, βisβ wont be matched twice. Match the sentence with the Regex. In Java, this can be done using Pattern.matcher ().
To work around it you may find spread operator helpful:
