Tap and long press on the message thread, holding the tap until a message preview pops up on the screen. Scan the message preview to review and read the message, as long as you don't tap it again you will keep the message in preview mode and be able to read the message without sending a read receipt.
Available for free in Google Play, Message Peeping Tom lets you read your messages without opening a messaging app. It collects the text from notifications one receives, and then sends it to a special tab in Message Peeing Tom where entire conversations can be viewed discreetly.
Some people don't have receipts enabled, and it's usually pretty easy to tell. If you send messages to them and they respond to you, but there is still no read receipt, odds are good that their read receipts are disabled. With Community, there are typically not regular read receipts that go along with text messages.
Yes, you can. The sms messages are stored in a Sqlite db file.
