PHP script not working to replace WordPress cron for multi-site

I am trying to replace the WordPress cron with the server cron for my multi-site. It seems that I have to add a cron entry for EACH site which could be a management nightmare. Instead, I want to run a single cron job that calls the cron for each sub-site. Below is a plugin script, but getting error 500. The error message is misleading and incorrect because it says something about the ffmpeg not installed (no other error message). Can someone please help me correct this? The plugin is in GitHub (https://github.com/chibani/wp_multisite_cron) but I think would make a great plugin for the community. Thanks for any help!

Why does cron not work in WordPress?

If you're still having trouble, it's possible that your host has disabled WP Cron or prevented it from running properly. This can be the case in some managed WordPress hosting environments. If this is the case, they may have replaced it with a proper cron running on the server instead (as mentioned above).

How do I disable WordPress cron?

In order to disable WP-Cron, you need to access the wp-config file for your website. To do this, log into cPanel and click on the “File Manager”icon. Once inside the file manager, click on the “public_html folder” and then search and open the wp-config file. define( 'DISABLE_WP_CRON' , true);

How do I know if my WordPress cron is working?

Step 2: Add any title or content to your page. Now click on "Edit" publish settings to set publish time to any future time. Refresh the page after a set time in the previous step. If the page gets published, then it means WP Cron is working.

Within your cron_call function, around line 200, you have this block:

//Add the url to the stack
$chs[$blog_id]=curl_init();
curl_setopt($chs[$blog_id], CURLOPT_URL, $cron_url);
curl_setopt($chs[$blog_id], CURLOPT_HEADER, 0);
curl_multi_add_handle($mh, $ch);

So first you initialize your curl handlers in the $chs array. Then, instead of using those values, you try to add the $ch variable to your multi handler, which is null I presume.

With proper error reporting settings and by checking the result of curl_multi_add_handle, you could probably see that the add handle operation failed.

From the php manual:

int curl_multi_add_handle ( resource $mh , resource $ch )

Return Values

Returns 0 on success, or one of the CURLM_XXX errors code.

EDIT: maybe I was not clear enough on the solution, but you need to replace

curl_multi_add_handle($mh, $ch);

with

curl_multi_add_handle($mh, $chs[$blog_id]);
