Is there a service available that responds with the latest version of Java that's available?
I'm writing system check for an application that uses applets. As part of the check I'd like to inform users if a new version of Java is available for download. Is there any online service that simply responds with the version number for the latest Java version?
The Java version can be found in the Java Control Panel. Under the General tab in the Java Control Panel, the version is available through the About section. A dialog appears (after clicking About) showing the Java version.
There are only two sites where official downloads and updates for Java are provided by Oracle: Java.com is recommended. Advanced users and developers may download from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), where the Java Development Kit (JDK) is also available.
The latest version of Java is Java 19 or JDK 19 released on September, 20th 2022 (follow this article to check Java version on your computer). JDK 19 is a regular update release, and JDK 17 is the latest Long Term Support (LTS) release of Java SE platform (about 8 years of support from Oracle).
How about a different strategy of 'leave it to the manufacturer'?
The JRE is configured by default to be auto-updating to the latest version Oracle considers to be stable enough for general use. Best leave it to the auto-update feature.
Of course, there is always How do I test whether Java is working on my computer?
An old version of Java has been detected on your system.
Update Java by clicking the button below:
A polite way of saying 'no plug-in found for FF'.
But ultimately either way, leave it to the end-user's discretion as to what version to use, and whether to update.
