Server Error in '/' Application.
What's a good one to troubleshoot this? I let debug step through everything in global.asax and no errors there.

I had exactly the same problem though my project is .Net 4.5. I solved it by following step 7 of Upgrading an ASP.NET MVC 3 Project to ASP.NET MVC 4
It is copied to here as following:
7.If the project references any third-party libraries that are compiled using previous versions of ASP.NET MVC, open the root Web.config file and add the following three bindingRedirect elements under the configuration section:
<configuration>
<!--... elements deleted for clarity ...-->
<runtime>
<assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1">
<dependentAssembly>
<assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Helpers"
publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" />
<bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0" newVersion="2.0.0.0"/>
</dependentAssembly>
